Dwight Garlo is Turtle Clan from Six Nations and the owner of Garlo’s Groceries, a local grocery store created to better serve the community. He built the store to give people access to food closer to home, especially for those who may not want to or cannot travel off reserve. Along with offering more affordable options than a typical convenience store, Dwight wanted the business to reflect something personal. Naming it Garlo’s Groceries was a way to make his mother and father proud and to build something meaningful under the family name.
Garlo’s Groceries was designed to be more than a place to pick up the basics. Dwight wanted to create a bright, welcoming food space where people could stop in for soup and sandwiches, while also finding options that support healthier lifestyles. The store offers low-carb and no-carb foods for people following ketogenic or ancestral approaches to eating, especially those trying to improve their health and avoid foods that can spike glucose and insulin. Through the business, Dwight has created a place where convenience, health, and community come together.

For Dwight, one of the most rewarding parts of being a business owner is knowing he can help feed his people properly. He takes pride in offering breakfast, lunch, and dinner options for those working toward better health, and he also enjoys building a team behind the business. Drawing from the mindset of coaching, he sees his employees as players working together toward a shared goal. By delegating responsibilities and passing on knowledge, he has created a workplace that runs as a team and gives him a strong sense of pride.

“One of the pros of being a business owner is being able to feed my people properly.”
