Introducing Kayanse, led by Kahentakeron Deer, the Ecological Team Lead and a proud member of the Six Nations community. Born and raised in the region, Kahentakeron has been dedicated to the company full-time since 2016, playing a pivotal role in its growth and impact.

Kayanse operates as both an ecological restoration company and a nursery, specializing in native plants native to Southern Ontario. With a greenhouse spanning 17,000 square feet, the team focuses on seed collection, propagation, and nurturing plants that have evolved in the area over millennia. Their fieldwork involves partnering with clients to plant native species, contributing to the restoration of landscapes and ecosystems.

Founded in 2006, Kayanse emerged from efforts to mitigate the environmental impacts of the Red Hill Valley Expressway project. By planting over a million plants within five years, the company not only addressed ecological damage but also brought valuable expertise to the community. Kahentakeron’s journey from physical labour to ecosystem management reflects his commitment to expanding knowledge and practices within the industry.

As a pioneering First Nations-owned and operated organization, Kayanse stands out in the field of ecological restoration. With a focus on diversity and the promotion of native plants, the company strives to create healthier ecosystems that support a wide array of organisms. Through their work, Kahentakeron and the Kayanse team exemplify the intersection of environmental stewardship and Indigenous knowledge, driving positive change in their community and beyond.
